GENERAL INFORMATION

Zacatlán which means in Nahuatl: "Place where grass abounds" is commonly nicknamed Zacatlán de las manzanas, because its cultivation is one of its main economic activities. Zacatlán is located at the beginning of the northern sierra of Puebla, located to the west of it, its average altitude is 2040 masl, the minimum is 1360 masl and the maximum is 2600 masl. It has a temperate sub-humid climate with an average annual temperature of 14.5 °C.

The highest temperatures oscillate between 21 and 23°C, while the lowest temperatures oscillate between 3 and 0°C.

Zacatlán has large extensions of forest in which you can find different species of pine, such as: white pine, strawberry tree, red pine, oyamel, white ocote and straight pine.

DID YOU KNOW?

• Primitive Zacatlán was founded between 1524 and 1539 in San Pedro Atmatla. Years later, due to an epidemic and a fire, the town had to be abandoned and rebuilt 2 kilometers to the north (current Zacatlán). Zacatlán has 3 names: one artistic-popular, one religious and one official.
• Popular artistic: Zacatlán de las manzanas.
• Religious: San Pedro Zacatlán.
• Official: Zacatlán by Ramón Márquez Galindo.
• The name "Zacatlán de las Manzanas" was adopted in the mid-18th century.
• Due to the cold and humid climate of Zacatlán, the apples brought by the Spanish colonizers adapted remarkably to the new land and their cultivation prospered tremendously.
• The ex-convent of Zacatlán is a temple older than the cathedral of Mexico and the cathedral

• María del Pilar, the first apple queen, was 12 years old when she was crowned.

In Zacatlán we have a great diversity of handicrafts such as Cantera (metate, molcajetes, paintings, sculpture), Mosaicism, pottery, clay, looms, fireworks, pleated fabric, typical costumes embroidered with threads and beads, pewter, woodwork, etc.
